There are three main types of pillows, orthopedic pillows, decorative pillows and sleeping/bed pillows. While decorative pillows are used mostly for ornamental purposes, orthopedic pillows keep the neck in alignment with the spine while sleeping and are hence also known as neck pillows.Sleeping pillows are usually rectangular in shape and come in three sizes - Standard (20x26), Queen (20x30), and King (20x36).The concept of the sleeping/bed pillow is thought to date back to prehistoric times, when a pillow used to be simply a stone or a piece of wood. The ancient Egyptians actually slept on pillows of stone.Pillows have the tendency to accumulate large amounts of dust and microbes. Hence, it’s important to replace them periodically.Sleeping on your side with one tucked under your pillow or head may be a sign that you are not enough support from the pillow. While choosing a pillow, make sure that it is designed to support the head, keep the spine in natural alignment, and also supports different sleep positions.
